This? Was one of the hottest field events I've attended. 92F plus 50% humidity on Saturday. Killer heat.

There were half a dozen that passed out on the field from the heat. That I know of. Really scary stuff. Truthfully? The public be damned and the site be damned. I don't care if they want their entertainment. There really should be a cutoff when the temps get this high. I guess the counter argument is that people need to know their own limits and not push past them, but that doesn't always work due to various sources of peer pressure, etc.

Be that as it may. The event happened.

We spent the day hauling big ass field guns up and down the field. The biggest problem? The damn cavalry. They dart about all over the place and you really have to make sure they see the signal that the gun is hot. Plus of course, ROAD APPLES EVERYWHERE. God.

Also? Spruce beer takes like Pinesol. :P

This is our speaking trumpet. And believe me, it gets used. Mostly to yell at cavalry (dragoons).

Some of the handy dandy knotwork that adorns the handle my sword. Being a maritime unit, even the non-officers can carry swords.

This is one of the lovely ladies of the Continental Line Artillery Battalion -- "Little Helen"

This is "Marie". She belongs to Proctor's Pennsylvania Artillery.

These folks are called "Progressive" reenactors. They don't use tents or any convenience items. They just lay their blanket on the ground and call it home.

I swear these guys had the right idea!

I have no idea why this picture is in here except to say that it is a shot of my hat with worthless colonial script in the hatband. Especially worthless as it was issued by the colony of New Jersey. XD

That big dirt mound in the distance is what is called a 'camp kitchen'. It is a ginormous communal oven made from .... dirt. It's actually pretty cool to use and is very much how they cooked on campaign.

And of course there is our fair lady of the artillery ..... Defiance.

Uhg. I hear you on the heat index thing. ><;

I'm down in FAR south-western VA and do my reenacting at Ingles Ferry. It seemed like the only weekends to exceed 100 degrees were the ones on which I had to run around in 18th c costume. :P

Heat. Ouch.

I'd love to do things like that... but I'm A) too chicken and too attached to my modern day stuff (try to get my camp-bed away from me and you're likely to be faced down by a mad Redcoat with fixed bayonet!) and B) it's too damn cold in the UK, especially overnight.

Your camp kitchen looks fantastic - we can't do anything like that here. Most sites won't even let us dig a proper fire pit, let alone throw up a mound of earth like that!

XD Glad you liked it. I've got some more pics over here on Photobucket if you're interested.

The site is due for a MAJOR overhaul this winter. :P

Yeah we've got about 10 US Milking Devons and maybe 15 Hog Island Sheep. We just had our first black lamb this spring. ^^
